about

I wrote 'Home' while I was in training at Fort Bragg, NC. My girlfriend at the time was living in Washington and being away from family and friends was starting to feel normal for me. This seems common in the military, as deployments and training are punctuated by reunions. It can be difficult, but it taught me to appreciate time with loved ones even more.

lyrics

I may seem like a pest
to call you on such short notice to say
I'm comin' home.

I packed my bags a week before and left a note on your front door that said
I'm comin' home.

Oh my God, I nearly died
when I saw you in that dress
I felt alive for the first time since I left home.

I even bought new clothes
that didn't smell like smoke
and late last night I wrote this song for you
it's called I'm comin' home.

from Songs For Soldiers, released April 1, 2012
I enlisted in the Army in January of 2004. In late 2005, a friend of mine offered to record a few of my songs before I moved to Fort Bragg, NC. I self-released those songs as an EP and later recorded five more, which turned into an album ("Home"). I started working with a manager around that time, and she arranged for me to fly home and play shows, along with a few festivals in between deployments and training. I left the Army in 2010 and have since composed soundtracks for two films (The Off Hours and Eden) with Jeramy Koepping and Matt Brown. We released an EP ("Builder") in January of 2011. I served as a military policeman with the 571st MP company out of Fort Lewis, WA, and as a special forces medic with 5th SFG(A) out of Fort Campbell, KY. I'm currently a full-time student at the University of Washington. I didn't bring a guitar on my first deployment, which was a mistake. Other soldiers in my unit had guitars but I felt really bad asking to borrow them all the time. After that I made sure to bring one whenever I could get away with it. I wrote most of my first album in my barracks room at Fort Lewis in Washington state. When I play those songs now it reminds me of living in the barracks (hanging out with friends, having to share a bathroom, the smell of pine sol and boot polish). Later on I started taking a laptop and guitar with me on deployments to record with. The quality of the recordings aren't great, but I enjoy being able to hear squeaky air conditioners and dust storms howling in the background.
